Gate openings and public firewood - Weekend of Dec 1-2

All un-gated areas are open for respectful recreation this weekend. Gate opening times are as follows:


• Buckley Bay: 6am - 4pm
• Northwest Bay: 7am - 5pm
• Nanaimo River: 6am - 3pm
• Copper Canyon: 6am-4pm
• Shawnigan: 6am - 4pm
• Iron River: 6:30am - 4:30pm


 
December 9 will be the last day for access into Buckley Bay, Iron River and Nanaimo River.

Please be aware it is still hunting season; dress appropriately.

Public firewood cutting permits and locations are available at the following locations Saturday and Sunday approximately 8am-3pm:

• Buckley Bay gate;
• Northwest Bay gate;
• Nanaimo Lakes Road (NLR-47) at 4.7 km;
• Shawnigan gate; and
• Copper Canyon.

Our fall firewood cutting season will wrap up in the next week or two.

Recreational Access Closures - South Nanaimo/Chase River area

Effective late November 2012, the following trails (or portions thereof) in the South Nanaimo area will be closed weekdays from 6am to 6pm.  These closures are expected to last until the end of January 2013.
  • Log Drop;
  • Humility;
  • Connector;
  • Inside Out;
  • Boy-o-Boy;
  • Cheater;
  • Feelin' Lucky;
  • Fuzzy Bunny;
  • Johnny Rotten;
  • Rusty Nail;
  • Summertime Rolls;
  • Out-n-About;
  • Like Butter;
  • Twister; and
  • Ruper Dupper.
Please look out for signage and respect these closures, for the safety of workers and recreationalists.

All gated and un-gated properties are open for safe, respectful recreation this weekend.

Hunting is permitted with the expectation that each individual has the appropriate license(s) and permit(s) in place as required under legislation.

Gate timing for recreationalists is as follows:
• Buckley Bay: 6am - 4pm
• Northwest Bay: 7am - 5pm
• Nanaimo River: 6am - 3pm
• Copper Canyon: 6am-4pm
• Shawnigan: 6am - 4pm
• Iron River: 6:30am - 4:30pm

To enter Nanaimo River area, you must also have undertaken watershed etiquette training and present your personal permit from this training. Training is available through the Nanaimo & District Fish & Game club.

Public firewood permits will be available at the following locations from approximately 8am-3pm at the following locations:
• Buckley Bay gate
• Northwest Bay gate
• Shawnigan gate; and
• Copper Canyon

Safety gear must be available to show at the time of permit purchase. This includes eye protection, ear protection, steel-toed footwear and chainsaw pants.

Temporary Road Closure - Loon Lake Main

Those people using Loon Lake Main during weekdays should expect temporary road closures due to road construction in the area during the next eight to ten weeks, effective Monday November 5.

Recreational access closure - Helgas Trail, Loon Loop & Hole in the Forest trails

Effective November 5, these three trails in the vicinity of Loon Lake are closed weekdays from 6am to 7pm due to road construction in the area. 

This closure is expected to take approximately eight to ten weeks.  The lifting of this closure will be updated on this blog.
