Gate Openings for the Weekend of June 21-22

The following gates are planned to be open for safe, responsible recreation this weekend.
Firewood cutting has been suspended for the foreseeable future based on current weather.

Iron River:  Gate opens at 7am and will close at 3:30pm.  Note not all road systems will be accessible due to forest operations continuing through the weekend.

Northwest Bay: Gate opens at 7am and will close at 4pm.
It's a great time of year to visit the wild rhododendrons at Rhododendron Lake.

Shawnigan (4890 Waters Road): Gate opens at 7am and closes at 4pm.

  1. Are there maps available for how to get to Rhododendren Lake? I have a Backroads map, but it doesn't have many of the roads on it and not all up to date. Where is the Northwest Bay gate?

  2. Basic maps and directions are available from the gate attendant at the Northwest Bay gate. No maps are made available online.

  3. Are the gates & roads to access Mt Arrowsmith (Judges route) currently open for weekday use?

  4. Cameron Main and Pass Main, the two roads traveled to access the trail head of Judges Route, are open for weekday access. However, these roads are busy with industrial traffic so it is recommended for use on weekends.

  8. The Northwest Bay Gate is located off Northwest Bay Haul Road in Nanoose Bay. It is the intersection just south of the community of Parksville. There is a gate attendant monitoring entry and exit during the gate hours posted.
