Gate Openings for the Weekend of April 3-6

The following gates are scheduled to be open this Easter long weekend for safe, responsible recreation:

Northwest Bay (Nanoose Bay): The gate will open at 9 am and will close promptly at 4 pm.

Copper Canyon (MacMillan Road, Chemainus): The gate will open at 9 am and will close promptly at 4 pm for Friday and Saturday.  The gate will be open by 10am Sunday and Monday, also closing at 4pm.

Shawnigan (Waters Road, Glenora): The gate will be open by 10 am and will close promptly at 4 pm.

Port Alberni gates:  On the north side of the valley, the CX21, CX91 and CX165 gates will be open.

Please note we only permit public use of our private forest lands on weekends when there is a significant reduction in safety risks in working and travelling around forestry operations/vehicles.
Friday and Monday for this holiday weekend are scheduled days off for industrial traffic.

Public Firewood Opportunities for the Weekend of April 3-6

We have multiple locations for firewood cutting this Easter long weekend.  Not every location is open for the four days - please read carefully.

In Nanoose Bay: Volunteer Nanaimo will be selling permits at our Northwest Bay gate off the Island Highway.  This is a community fundraiser.  They will be selling April 3-6.

In South Nanaimo:  The Pauline Haarer PAC will be selling permits at our site off of Extension Road near the intersection with Virostko Road.  This is a community fundraiser.  They will be selling April 3-6.

In Chemainus:  The Ladysmith Sportsman Club will be selling permits at our Copper Canyon gate off MacMillan Road.  This is a community fundraiser.  They will be selling April 3-4.

These sites will open for permit sales at 9am and sales will end at 3pm.  Individuals will be allowed to continue cutting until 4pm.

A permit is valid for a truckload of firewood; each permit costs $30 cash.

In order to purchase a permit, you must demonstrate you have the correct safety gear with you as you travel in.  This includes stable, closed-toe footwear, eye protection and chainsaw pants/chaps.  Hearing protection is recommended.

You can travel in and out cutting up to three loads per day for personal use.

For non-fundraiser firewood:

In Shawnigan (Glenora):  Firewood permits can be purchased at the Regional Visitor Information Center in Duncan, next to the Forest Discovery Center.  Their hours fluctuate in the spring months; we advise you call ahead to make sure they are open when you plan to visit to purchase a permit - 1-888-303-3337.  See the gate opening post for information on gate timing.

In Port Alberni:  Firewood permits can be purchased at the Visitor Information Center at the east side of town.  The hours can fluctuate so give them a call first at 250-724-6535 to see if they are open.  They will provide a map to three areas open for firewood cutting close to town.

Gate Openings for the Weekend of March 28-29

The following gates are scheduled to be open this weekend for safe, responsible recreation:

Northwest Bay (Nanoose Bay): The gate will open at 9 am and will close promptly at 4 pm.  A public firewood program will be run from this gate.

Copper Canyon (MacMillan Road, Chemainus): The gate will open at 9 am and will close promptly at 4 pm.  A public firewood program will be run from this gate.

Shawnigan (Waters Road, Glenora): The gate will be open by 10 am and will close promptly at 4 pm.

Port Alberni gates:  The CX21, CX91 and CX165 gates will be open.  The Canal Main gate at the entrance to the Sproat shop area will be closed for the weekend.  The Arbutus Main gate and Island/TimberWest gate on the Comox Connector will be closed.

Please note we only permit public use of our private forest lands on weekends when there is a significant reduction in safety risks in working and travelling around forestry operations/vehicles.


Public Firewood Opportunities - Weekend of March 28-29

We have multiple locations for firewood cutting this upcoming weekend.  The first four are fundraisers for local community groups.

In Qualicum:  The Parksville Fish and Game Club will be selling permits off of Hilliers Road South, near the intersection with Highway 4.  This is at a recently harvested area visible from Highway 4 & Highway 19.

In Nanoose Bay: Football Nanaimo will be selling permits at our Northwest Bay gate off the Island Highway.

In South Nanaimo - two sites:  
The Chase River Parent Advisory Committee will be selling permits off of McKeown Road in the Cinnabar area.

The VIPL soccer team will be selling permits at a new site off of Extension Road near the intersection with Virostko Road.

In Chemainus:  Ladysmith Search and Rescue will be selling permits at our Copper Canyon gate off MacMillan Road.

These sites will open for permit sales at 9am and sales will end at 3pm.  Individuals will be allowed to continue cutting until 4pm.

A permit is valid for a truckload of firewood; each permit costs $30 cash.

Public Firewood Opportunities - Weekend of March 21-22

There will be three locations for firewood cutting this upcoming weekend.  Each are fundraiser programs for local community groups.

In Nanoose Bay: The Nanaimo Diamonds baseball team will be selling firewood permits at our Northwest Bay gate off the Island Highway.

Public Firewood Opportunity - Weekend of March 14-15

The Vancouver Island University Men's Basketball team is selling firewood permits to the public at our Nanoose Bay location this weekend.

The gate will open at 9am and is expected to close at 4pm.  They will not be selling permits past 3pm.

A permit is valid for a truckload of firewood; it costs $30 cash.

In order to purchase a permit, you must demonstrate you have the correct safety gear with you as you travel in.  This includes stable, closed-toe footwear, eye protection and chainsaw pants/pads.  Hearing protection is recommended.

You can travel in and out cutting up to three loads per day for personal use.

As a trial for this weekend, a commercial firewood contractor will be set up on site to help speed your firewood cutting.  If you would like to employ their services, an extra cash charge will be organized by their crew.

Gate Openings and Public Firewood Opportunities for the Weekend of March 14-15

The following gates are scheduled to be open this weekend for safe, responsible recreation:

Northwest Bay (Nanoose Bay): Gate opens by 9am, and will close promptly at 4pm.  A public firewood program will be run from this gate.

Copper Canyon (MacMillan Road, Chemainus): Gate opens by 10am, and will close promptly at 4pm.

Shawnigan (Waters Road, Glenora): Gate opens by 10am, and will close promptly at 4pm.

Comox 21:  Gate will be open this weekend.

Comox Main: Island Timberlands/TimberWest gate:  This gate is located near the back of the Ash Valley.  It will be locked for the foreseeable future.

Gate Openings for the Weekend of March 7-8

The following gates are scheduled to be open this weekend for safe, responsible recreation:

Northwest Bay: Gate opens by 9am, and will close promptly at 4pm.

Copper Canyon: Gate opens by 10am, and will close promptly at 4pm.

Shawnigan: Gate opens by 10am, and will close promptly at 4pm.

Comox21:  Gate will be opened by 10am Saturday for the foreseeable future (access to Elsie Lake).

Comox Main: Island Timberlands/TimberWest gate:  This gate is located near the back of the Ash Valley.  It will be locked for the foreseeable future.


Public firewood will be sold only through our Northwest Bay gate in Nanoose Bay this weekend.

Public Firewood Opportunity - Weekend of March 7-8

The Ecole Pauline Haarer Parent Advisory Council will be selling firewood permits as a fundraiser this weekend.

They will be stationed at our Northwest Bay gate off Highway 19 in Nanoose Bay - 1420 East Island Highway.

The gate will be open 9am-4pm for firewood cutting.  Firewood cutters will not be sold permits after 3pm.

One truckload of firewood will cost $30.  Cash only.

Firewood cutters must present the following safety equipment at the time of permit purchase:  chainsaw pants/pads, eye protection, work boots/hiking boots.  Hearing protection and gloves are recommended but not required.
