Firewood opportunities for the weekend of September 12-13 - UPDATE

Permits for firewood harvesting, and access to firewood areas, will be available for sale this weekend.

There are two ways to purchase a firewood permit.

First, we are introducing online permit sales from our website.  STARTING FRIDAY SEPT. 11 - Go to; http://islandtimberlands.com/community/Firewoodpermit.aspx, fill out the form and pay using your credit card or PayPal.

This weekend the only areas open to purchase firewood for are Northwest Bay, Ash and Cameron on our 'Operating Area' list.

Once payment has occurred, you will be emailed your firewood permit, the map of the area for firewood harvesting and the rules applicable to firewood harvesting.

Second, permits and associated maps are available for purchase at two visitor information centers on Vancouver Island (1) the Cowichan Regional Visitor Center at 2896 Drinkwater Road (250-746-4636) in Duncan for our Shawnigan area; and (2) at the Port Alberni Visitor Center at 2533 Port Alberni Hwy.

The Cowichan Regional Visitor Center hours are from 9am-5pm Monday-Saturday (with exception of this coming holiday Monday), and 10am-2pm for Sundays and the holiday Monday.  The Port Alberni Visitor Information Center is open from 9am-5pm daily.

You must have a copy of your firewood permit on you at all times when cutting firewood, and transporting it to your residence.

  1. This looks great except I went to the link to buy a permit for this weekend and it won't sell me one. It says no permits currently available because of the weather conditions. . Are you just toying with us or is this link going to be up and running soon?

  2. The link is so far not up and running. ....perhaps someone should be on the gate this weekend to take monies and issue permits until this gets resolved. .?

  3. The link will be ready for Friday. Firewood permits will not be sold at any gate for the foreseeable future. The only physical point of sale are for firewood permits in the Shawnigan area, available at the Cowichan Visitor Information Center.

  10. Based on the 9:39 comment, I was about to drive to Port Alberni Visitor Information Center to get a permit, but I took the precaution of calling first. I'm glad I did because the lady there says. they do NOT, repeat DO NOT have permits for northwest bay. No maps, no permits. No help there.

  11. The Port Alberni Visitor Center sells permits for the Port Alberni area. The Cowichan Regional Visitor Center sells permits for the Shawnigan area.

Once we have permits ready to go specifically for Northwest Bay we will announce it here. We appreciate the enthusiasm and your patience.

  12. Hi, What size and type of wood is available for firewood cutting? I'm actually looking for some larger logs for my yard and smaller stuff to burn. Thanks!

  13. The firewood available for harvesting varies by each site and weekend day.

  14. The areas that are open have been picked over pretty well, not much fir left, mostly cedar and hemlock and even that is pretty sparse. I'm getting too old for that kind of work anyway, have to pick my spots. Any chance of getting a heads up when you open up some new areas? Any idea when that might happen?.

  15. New areas will likely be introduced every month or so. It will vary region to region, so we cannot provide a defined timeline.
