Hunting will be permitted on Island Timberlands' property for the fall season weekends only (including statutory holidays). This is to minimize safety concerns.
Gates scheduled for opening are as follows:
-Shawnigan (off Waters Road): Open 6am-4pm
-Copper Canyon (from MacMillan Road): Open 6am-4pm
-Nanaimo River Camp* (off Nanaimo Lakes Road): Open 6am-3pm
-Northwest Bay* (off Highway 19): Open 6am-4pm
-Buckley Bay (off Highway 19): Open 6am-4pm
-Oyster River (from Cranberry Road): Open 6am-4pm
These gates will be closed promptly at these posted times. You will be locked in for the night if you do not plan your exit time accordingly.
All other gates not listed may or may not be open, and may be closed at any time. If you enter with your vehicle you risk being locked in.
*Northwest Bay and Nanaimo River Camp: Gates attendants from VIU will be collecting information for the Province and for Island Timberlands, such as hunter effort and time in and out of our private property.
At Shawnigan, Copper Canyon, Buckley Bay and Oyster River, there will be sign in stations set up that may or may not be attended by our security team. We request that you sign in and out for safety purposes.
Hi there - First: thank you for opening for hunting - that is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteAlso - I was wondering if gate #148 at the end of Pannell Road will be open for hunting on foot during the fall season. If so, are there specific hours for people on foot, or can you hunt from dawn until dusk, as you don't need an open gate? Thank you for your help!
Does the Oyster River opening include the gate located at the Oyster River logging bridge, or is that Timberwest land. Thank you
ReplyDeleteIs the bridge you refer to on the Duncan Bay mainline, before the guard shack?
ReplyDeleteIt is on the Duncan Bay Mainline, but instead of turning to the Guard shack it is another 2-3km down the road. There is a gate at the bridge that crosses right over the Oyster, just before the road continues over the highway. Wasn't sure if it was your gate or Timberwest. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteThis is TimberWest property.
ReplyDeleteWe likely will not be opening the Pannell Road gate at this time. The focus will be to open our most prominent gates at this time. If we receive more feedback about secondary gates, we will reconsider. Good feedback.

ReplyDeleteHow about hunting in shawnigan, off renfrew Rd up the kapor m line? Is that still restricted?
ReplyDeleteThe only gate scheduled to be open for recreation at this time, including hunting, is the main Shawnigan gate off Waters Road.
ReplyDeleteIf a gate is closed, is it closed to foot traffic and hunting on foot?
ReplyDeleteGreat question. Access by foot is permitted unless a sign or road block of some sort is posted.
ReplyDeleteHi new too the area. Is there signs too direct me to the nanaimo river camp for hunting?
ReplyDeleteNo, there are no clear signs to this area. You travel down Nanaimo River Road past Nanaimo Lakes Road for about 3km and turn left.
ReplyDeleteWill Butler Main be open this weekend?
ReplyDeleteIsland Timberlands does not own a road called Butler Main. If you mean Buckley Bay Main, it will be open the weekend of September 26/27. Please look at the post specific to the weekend.
ReplyDeleteThank you for opening your land to hunters. Much appreciated
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to check on the wood lot at the end of Ashling Road. the gate is closed not a problem is hunting on foot through this access, on weekends and stat holidays ok
I live on Meadowood Way, in Qualicum River Estates.
ReplyDeleteI was would like to check and confirm if it is ok to hunt on foot in the Island Timber Wood Lot at the end of Ashling Road (it is up here off Meadowood way )
It is a nice area that connect to Spider lake.
On weekends and stat holidays ?
Island Timberlands owns private managed forest land beyond the end of Ashling Road; this differs from a woodlot. Walk on access beyond our gate for respectful recreation weekends and thus holiday Monday is permitted.
ReplyDeleteJust a heads up. We met a guy today (ex-military) who was hunting. He said he would shoot any off leash dogs he saw (under the assumption that they were chasing wildlife). He also said hunting is open on week days on your land, which I knew isn't true as you clearly have posted it on your blog that it, like all public access, is limited to weekends only. Orange vests are a good idea during hunting season for you and your dogs if you hike in the area with or without dogs. Keep everyone safe out there.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this information with us.
ReplyDeleteWe look to provide safe recreation opportunities for the public on weekends only when we are not busy working, as we are during the week.
This is a great reminder for everyone to recreate safely.
Good work on this post! I really like the way you delivered your qualitative facts and how you made this fascinating and effortless to realize. Thank you!! http://elitehuntsman.com
