Firewood Opportunities for January 1-3, 2016

There are no firewood opportunities planned open for this first weekend in 2016.

Expect areas for firewood harvesting to be opened for future weekends in January.

The road network accessing Mt. Arrowsmith will be open for January 1-3.

All other gates on east and west Vancouver Island are expected to be closed for this holiday and weekend.

Firewood Opportunities for the Weekends of Dec 19-20 and Dec 26-27

Three areas are open for firewood for the last two weekends of 2015:  Northwest Bay, Cameron and Ash.

Permits can be purchased online at our website or at two Tourist Information Centers - Port Alberni and Parksville.

  • For Port Alberni area firewood, go to the Port Alberni Visitor Center at 2533 Port Alberni Hwy; hours are 9am-5pm daily.
  • For Northwest Bay area firewood, go to the Parksville Visitor Center at 1275 East Island Highway.

There is no firewood available in the Shawnigan, Chemainus, Oyster, Buckley Bay, Port McNeill, Powell River or Extension areas at this time.

Safety Equipment Required:
Safety gear is mandatory while cutting; you will not be sold a firewood permit if you cannot present your safety gear before you enter the site and privileges will be revoked if you do not wear it while cutting.  Gear includes protective footwear, eye protection, ear protection, chainsaw pads/pants and gloves.

You must have a copy of your firewood permit on you at all times when cutting firewood, and transporting it to your residence.  It can be on paper, or on a tablet or smartphone.

Please review gate timing on the 'Access Information' blog post for this weekend to ensure you are not too early or too late to get your firewood.

Access Information for Weekends Dec 19-20 & Dec 26-27

The following gates are expected to be open for the last two weekends in 2015.
We permit access on weekends.  Do not expect any additional gates to be opened.
  • Shawnigan: Open 8am / close 4pm.
  • Northwest Bay:  Open 8am / close 4pm.
  • Cameron Main : Open.  
  • Cameron Connector:  Open.
  • Ash Main, Comox Main, Canal Main:  Open 
  • Pass Main (access to Mt. Arrowsmith):  Open

These gates will be closed promptly at these posted times.  You will be locked in for the night if you do not plan your exit time accordingly.

All other gates not listed may or may not be open, and may be closed at any time. If you enter with your vehicle you risk being locked in; we will not send staff out to open any gate after hours.
You may have to pay a tow truck to have your vehicle removed.

No fires, no camping, and no off-road vehicles (i.e. ATVs, UTVs, buggies or side-by-sides) are authorized on our private property.

Nanaimo Community Firewood Fundraiser - Last one for 2015

The Wellington Secondary Band will be selling firewood permits at our NLR47 gate this weekend (Nanaimo Lakes Road, approximately 4.7km from the intersection of Wakesiah and Nanaimo Lakes Road).

Permits will be sold for $30 cash per load (~2/3 of a cord, i.e one pick-up truck or trailer).

Sales will start at 8am and close at 3pm.

Firewood Opportunities for the Weekend of December 12-13

Online permit sales for firewood harvesting in the Northwest Bay, Cameron, and Ash areas are available at - http://www.islandtimberlands.com/community/Firewoodpermit.aspx

If you do not receive two emails immediately after purchasing your permit, one from us and the other from PayPal, the transaction has not been successful.  Troubleshooting tips:  
   1) Try refreshing your page, 
   2) Ensure you have a strong, stable internet connection, and 
   3) Sign up for a PayPal account and purchase through PayPal.  

If you are have difficulties, please email environment@islandtimberlands.com and we will respond to you on the next business day.

  • For Port Alberni area firewood, go to the Port Alberni Visitor Center at 2533 Port Alberni Hwy; hours are 9am-5pm daily.
  • For Northwest Bay area firewood, go to the Parksville Visitor Center at 1275 East Island Highway.

There is no firewood available in the Shawnigan, Chemainus, Oyster, Buckley Bay, Port McNeill, Powell River or Extension areas at this time.

Firewood is no longer available in our Oyster or Buckley Bay areas.

It remains available in Northwest Bay, Nanaimo and Port Alberni at this time for weekend harvesting.

Access Closure - Cameron Mainline

The Cameron Mainline, from 0km to 8km, will be closed on December 4 until further notice in anticipation of heavy rainfall in the area.

This closure has been placed in order to minimize impact on water quality to Bainbridge Lake, in our partnership with the City of Port Alberni.

Access Information for the Weekend of December 5-6

The following gates are expected to be open for this weekend.
Do not expect any additional gates to be opened for the weekend.
  • Shawnigan*: Open 6am / close 4pm.
  • Chemainus*:  Open 6am/ close 4pm.  Note the road is closed for the foreseeable future at 22km.  You cannot access past this point.
  • Nanaimo River Camp*:  Open 6am / close 3pm.
  • Northwest Bay*:  Open 6am / close 4pm.
  • Buckley Bay*:  Open 6am / close 4pm.
  • Oyster River*:  Open 6am / close 4pm.  Note the road is closed for the foreseeable future at 17km.  You cannot access past this point.
  • Cameron Main to 17km - expect it to be closed at 17km.  
  • Ash Main, Comox Main, Canal Main:  Open 
  • Pass Main (access to Mt. Arrowsmith):  Open
