Recreational Access Closure - Cameron Mainline at 8km

Cameron Mainline is closed to the public until further notice where it joins with the Cameron Connector (approximately 8km).  You cannot drive past the 8km point at this time.


This closure is necessary for road safety.


Access Information for the Weekend of January 30-31

The following gates are expected to be open this weekend.
We permit access on weekends only.  Do not expect any additional gates to be opened
  • Copper Canyon:  Open 8am / close 4pm
  • Northwest Bay:  Open 8am / close 4pm
  • Cameron Main : Open. 
  • Cameron Connector:  Open
  • Ash Main, Comox Main, Canal Main:  Open 
  • Pass Main (access to Mt. Arrowsmith):  Open

These gates will be closed promptly at these posted times.  You will be locked in for the night if you do not plan your exit time accordingly.

All other gates not listed may or may not be open, and may be closed at any time. If you enter with your vehicle you risk being locked in; we will not send staff out to open any gate for you after hours, or if it is not posted to be open.
You may have to pay a tow truck to have your vehicle removed.


Firewood harvesting for personal use is available; please review the firewood specific blog post for the weekend.

No fires, no camping, and no off-road vehicles (i.e. ATVs, UTVs, buggies or side-by-sides) are authorized on our private property.

There is no firewood available in the Shawnigan, Chemainus, Oyster, Buckley Bay, Port McNeill, Powell River or Extension areas at this time.

Safety gear is mandatory while cutting; you will not be sold a firewood permit if you cannot present your safety gear before you enter the site and privileges will be revoked if you do not wear it while cutting.  Gear includes protective footwear, eye protection, ear protection, chainsaw pads/pants and gloves.

You must have a copy of your firewood permit on you at all times when cutting firewood, and transporting it to your residence.  It can be on paper, or on a tablet or smartphone.

Recreational Access Closure - Stokes Creek Trail, Port Alberni

This trail, as it crosses Island Timberlands' private managed forest land, is closed effective January 26, 2016 for an estimated eight weeks.

This trail closure is in effect weekdays, in order to allow for safe forestry operations in the area.

Firewood Opportunities for the Weekend of January 23-24

Three areas are open for firewood for this weekend:  Northwest Bay and Port Alberni (Cameron and Ash).  There is a community firewood fundraiser in Nanaimo off Nanaimo Lakes Road 47 (NLR-47).  This is the first major gate on the right hand side of the road past the Nanaimo Fish & Game Club.

Permits for Northwest Bay and Port Alberni can be purchased online at our website or at the two respective Tourist Information Centers - Port Alberni and Parksville.

Recreational Access Closure - Extension Ridge Trail/Trans Canada Trail

The Extension Ridge Trail, also known as the Trans Canada Trail or the Abyss trail, is closed for the next few months as it extends from Harewood Mines Road to the southeast through private managed forest land.

This trail closure is anticipated to last until the end of March 2016.  It is required to facilitate safe forest operations in the area.

Firewood will be available in Port Alberni only this weekend.

Permits are available through our website, or for purchase at the local Visitor Information Center off Highway 4.

Permits cost $20, and the sites we have set up for firewood harvesting are reasonably close to town.

Safety equipment is an absolute must:  high-visibility vest, hearing protection, eye protection, chainsaw pants/pads, suitable footwear.

Firewood is planned for the Northwest Bay area, as well, for next weekend.
