Firewood Information for the Weekend of April 2-3


Firewood is available to harvest on weekends only.

Mandatory safety gear:  eye protection, ear protection, stable, closed toe footwear and chainsaw pads/pants.

Access Information for the Weekend of April 2-3


The following gates and major roads are expected to be open this weekend.
We permit access on weekends only.  Do not expect any additional gates to be opened.
  • Shawnigan (Glenora):  Open 9am-3pm
  • Mines Road:  Open 8am-4pm 
  • Copper Canyon (Chemainus Main):  Open 8am-4pm to 22km only  
  • Myles Lake Road:  Closed
  • Northwest Bay:  Open 8am-4pm
  • Spider Lake Main (Ashling Road): Open 8:30am-3:30pm 
  • Cameron Main : Open
  • Cameron Connector:  Open
  • Loon Lake Main: Closed
  • Ash Main:  Open
  • Comox Main:  Open
  • Canal Main:  Open 
  • Pass Main (access to Mt. Arrowsmith):  Open
  • Buckley Bay:  Closed
  • Oyster River: Closed

These gates will be closed promptly at these posted times.  You will be locked in for the night if you do not plan your exit time accordingly.  All other gates not listed may or may not be open, and may be closed at any time.

If you enter with your vehicle you risk being locked in; we will not send staff out to open any gate for you after hours as listed above, or if it is not posted to be open.  You will have to pay a tow truck to have your vehicle removed.

Firewood Opportunities for the Weekend of March 19th and 20th

Below are the areas where there are firewood cutting opportunities (see Figure 1).  Please note the Status column to determine if the area is "Open" or "Closed" for firewood.  Note that Firewood Cutting is only available on weekends and some Statutory Holidays.

Permits for all of our firewood areas are available online at our website or currently at two Tourist Information Centers - Port Alberni and Parksville.  Note that these centers may be closed on the weekends and/or holidays.

You must have a valid firewood permit and carry it with you at all times.  If you are stopped without a valid permit, you will be instructed to empty your load.

  • For Port Alberni (Cameron and Ash) area firewood, go to the Port Alberni Visitor Center at 2533 Port Alberni Highway; and
  • For Northwest Bay and Spider Lake area firewood, go to the Parksville Visitor Center at 1275 East Island Highway.
Safety Equipment Required:
Gear includes protective footwear, eye protection, ear protection, chainsaw pads/pants and gloves.
Safety gear is mandatory while cutting firewood; you will not be permitted to cut firewood if you cannot present your safety equipment.  Permits and Firewood privileges will be revoked if you do not have the required safety gear and/or you are found to be cutting wood without it.  Expect to be asked for your firewood permit and to provide an inspection of your safety equipment.  There are no exceptions to these requirements.

Four areas are open for firewood for this weekend: Northwest Bay, Port Alberni (Cameron and Ash), Buckley Bay and Spider Lake (End of Ashling Road). Note that Buckley Bay will be open at 9:00am and will close at 3:00pm.  Spider Lake will be open at 8:30am and close at 3:30pm.

Secondly there are overview maps online that provide directions from the pavement 9public road) to the firewood area.

Two areas are open for firewood for this weekend: Northwest Bay and Port Alberni (Cameron and Ash) and Shawnigan.  For those interested, there is a new area available for the Northwest Bay firewood in the Qualicum region off Ashling Road.  NWB has a additional area at Spider lake (SPL27) and the hours are 8:30-3:30 pm.Note updated Friday March 4th @ 0830 the Mines road 24 block is unavailable this weekend for firewood cutting.
